Description
General Information
Bisacodyl is a diphenylmethane stimulant laxative which acts on contact with the mucosa of the large bowel to increase peristaltic activity and increase the formation of soft formed stools. The laxative effect occurs within 15-60 minutes of administration of the suppository.
Warnings
The suppositories should be used with caution in patients with rectal fissures or ulcerated haemorrhoids. Care should be also taken in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Prolonged use of laxatives is undesirable and may lead to dependence. The correct management of uncomplicated constipation lies in correct diet, fluid intake and exercise. Patients being treated for this condition should therefore drink plenty of water and increase the fibre content of their diet. Laxatives should not be used as part of a weight reduction programme. Bisacodyl Suppositories should not be swallowed.
